UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

What changes when hot water fails

Two simultaneous showers place a different demand on an instantaneous gas water heater than a single kitchen tap. The available temperature rise depends on water flow, incoming temperature and the model’s rated output. We first establish what the installed appliance is expected to handle and what has changed, rather than describing every drop in shower temperature as a defective geyser.

Two bathrooms running at the same time

A heater selected for one shower may struggle to maintain the same outlet temperature when a second bathroom opens. The symptom is important if it occurs only under combined demand. We ask how long the heater has been installed and whether it ever maintained both showers satisfactorily; a performance limit is not the same as a sudden component failure.

Pressure change between upstairs and downstairs

Flow conditions can vary at different fixtures, especially where property plumbing contains pressure-reducing devices, long pipe runs or boosted supply. An instantaneous heater responds to the flow through it, not the apparent size of the shower spray alone. Note whether the cold-water supply remains strong when hot water falls away.

Temperature cycling during long showers

A heater that alternates between hot and cold at a steady fixture may be activating and shutting down repeatedly. Mixer behaviour, insufficient water flow and the heater’s own controls can produce similar sensations. We need the operating sequence, any code shown and whether the problem appears at one or more taps before discussing parts.

Interpreting output ratings

A headline litre-per-minute rating is not a promise of a fixed temperature in every season. The manufacturer’s specified temperature rise at that flow matters. We consider the unit label, the expected number of users and the actual outlet demand when deciding whether assessment should focus on a fault or on system sizing.

New mixer or bathroom refurbishment

A newly installed low-flow shower or thermostatic mixer may reduce heater activation flow even when the user perceives adequate spray. If the trouble started after a refurbishment, that history is helpful. We examine compatibility and operating conditions before touching the appliance’s gas system.

Safe flue and heater access

Where a gas heater is concealed in a cupboard or utility area, its specified air supply, exhaust route and service clearances remain essential. Please do not remove fixed covers or pack belongings around an appliance to conceal it. Describe the installation and leave any regulated inspection to a registered practitioner.

Repair versus a correctly designed replacement

If a heater repeatedly fails under demand it once served, a repair may be relevant. If its rated capacity was never adequate, replacing components will not solve that fundamental limitation. A new system needs appropriately qualified design and installation assessment, not simply a larger box attached to the same pipework.

Preparing a Brecknock enquiry

State how many taps were running, whether temperatures recover once one closes, and the installed model if known. Include whether a pressure booster or storage tank is used. We confirm your exact address and the nature of the proposed service before offering an appointment.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Does a second shower mean the geyser is faulty?

Not necessarily; combined demand may exceed the heater’s rated output.

Will a larger unit fit the existing gas supply?

Do not assume that. Supply and exhaust arrangements need registered professional assessment.

Can a new mixer affect heater operation?

Yes. A lower hot-side flow may change activation on certain instantaneous units.
